I have been working in Paediatrics for the past 22 years
Apples are the first thing mentioned when we recommend children increase roughage in their diet. We always advise parents to make sure any child with constipation problems eat apples along with their skins. Overall, it is a healthy snack suitable for all kids. To my knowledge, there are no contraindications and I've not encountered anyone who is allergic to apples.
In Children's Ward, there are always apples (Delicious brand) in the fruit bowl, ready for children to eat during the recovery phase of their illness or operation. It is the one fruit that is always regularly ordered by our staff to be on standby for the kids.
And I will admit on the rare occasion, I have been known to pinch one as a snack, especially during one of those busy hospital night shifts when I'm running between Emergency Department and the wards. But only when the fruit bowl was full and I would never take the last one!
Delicious
Any recipe that makes an apple pie!
Nowadays, my local fruit shops in Maroubra. Previously, I accompanied my parents into Flemington Markets where we buy apples by the boxful (delicious).
No, it's a funny saying. It's a time-honoured doctor joke that takes a light-hearted perspective that eating an apple a day (like a food supplement) maintains your health and so keeps the doctor away. In fact, it is really promoting preventative medicine. All good with me.
There is a lot of confusing, conflicting medical advice out there that keeps evolving which makes it hard for doctors to keep up, let alone lay people. Everyone intrinsically knows what a healthy diet and lifestyle SHOULD be. So my best advice is to keep it simple and healthy. Makes it easier to stick to it and add adjustments along the way.
Extremely important. It is the one of two key health messages that we impart to patients that is totally under their control. The other is of course exercise.
I'm a big apple eater. Easily 10-12 apples a week when in season. And about 5-7 when not in season.
The benefits to the community will be worth it. I am hoping to see less kids at the hospital because of this campaign. Hey I won't be needed as much if children are healthy! But that is always a good thing. Oh well, it looks like it will take longer for me to pay off my mortgage and the boat will have to wait!
