Today Show's search for Australia's healthiest school 2010

Searching for Australia's Healthiest School

Aussie Apples is on the hunt for Australia’s Healthiest School – could it be your local school?

In conjunction with Channel 9’s Today Show, it’s calling on budding Spielbergs to send in 60-second videos on why their school could be the nation’s healthiest.

Up for grabs is a grand prize of $25,000 and the only criterion for the short film is that somewhere in the film, the entry must feature Aussie apples.

Apple & Pear Australia Chairman Darral Ashton said it’s a wonderful way to highlight and applaud the fantastic healthy living initiatives taking place in Australian schools.

“From innovative sporting programs, to uniquely healthy canteen menus, to school vegetable markets – each year we have been amazed by the exciting activities school communities are embracing to help make their kids healthier,” Darral said.

“This is a great way to honour the best and we hope it also inspires schools around the nation to be healthy and have fun doing it.”

The competition runs July 19 to August 6 with the winner announced on the Today Show on Tuesday, August 31, with a live broadcast from the winning school!

Ten tips for making a video

  1. Choose a theme that will run all the way through the video. Think about the video in three parts: 1 - the open or introduction, 2 - the body and 3 - summary or close. While a script should have structure, it does not need to be a linear sequence of events.
  2. Draft a script describing both vision and sound (sound effects and voiceover). If you are featuring someone talking to camera, think about intercutting with close ups and footage of what they are talking about. This not only will make the video more interesting but will help avoid having to memorise the full script and deliver it in a single take.
  3. Draw a rough storyboard of your script. You can use this to ensure you capture all the footage you need as well as ensuring the content will work well together.
  4. Be organised. Write a checklist of all props, costumes, people and any other elements you will need to film. Nominate an individual to be responsible to bring each of these items to the location when you are filming. Consider outside noise that may interrupt your sound recording.
  5. When filming, use camera moves such as pans, different angles and tilts wisely. Be careful not to take away from what you are filming with too many moves.
  6. Review all the footage and select the best takes for each scene. Putting the time in upfront will make editing easier at the next phase.
  7. Prepare a draft edit. This is likely to be longer than the final edit, but will provide you with an idea of how the video will flow.
  8. Stay focused on the central theme when editing. Don’t be tempted to include everything you have filmed and be open to moving sections around to help tell your story. The most entertaining videos tend to change image every 3-5 seconds.
  9. Consider using graphics and supers to help clarity of message.
  10. Have fun making the video – it will show in the end product.
